Public water could be cause of Alzheimer’s and miscarriage
Disinfectants in public water could be a cause of neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s, scientists say. They also suspect that the treated water from our taps (faucets) may also be linked to miscarriages and some cancers.
Scientists from the University of Illinois have identified 600 DBPs (disinfection byproducts) from a public water sample – and yet they know almost nothing about the majority of them. They know some are toxic, and the US’s Environmental Protection Agency regulates just 11 of the DBPs, including HAAs (haloacetic acids).
The Illinois researchers suspect that the HAAs could be playing a part in cases of Alzheimer’s, pregnancy outcomes and cancer because they can kill cells and damage the DNA.
