The average home has a range of pesticides on the floor – even from products that were taken off the market years before.
The most common pesticides were permethrin, found in measurable levels in 89 per cent of homes surveyed, followed by chlorpyrifos, in 78 per cent of homes, and chlordane, in 74 per cent of homes.
Although the actual levels were low, researchers are concerned that they could have a cumulative effect on the people living in the homes, and small children may be especially vulnerable. The researchers were also concerned by the longevity of many of the pesticides. Some had been taken off the market years before, but had survived many floor washes in the meantime.
