* Sun exposure can elevate vitamin D body levels and, say US researchers, may protect against breast cancer. Diets rich in vegetables, fruits, grains and oily fish are also protective. Blood levels of vitamin D are generally higher in northern countries and fish may be the main source in these cases (Cancer, 2002; 94: 272-81).

* Injury resulting from roller coaster and other amusement park rides may be on the rise, according to new data from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and from published literature on the physiological effects of roller coasters. US researchers have estimated that 900 million thrill rides are taken each year; one in 124,000 results in injury requiring medical attention, one in 15 million results in injury requiring hospitalisation and one in 150 million ends in death (Ann Emerg Med, 2002; 39: 65-72).
