One of the most widely used pain relievers may cause asthma and wheezing in both children and adults, a major new research study has discovered.
Tylenol (acetaminophen), which is commonly used to relieve pain and reduce fever, almost doubles the chances for asthma, researchers from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver have discovered.
They reanalysed 19 studies, which involved more than 425,000 people who developed asthma or wheezing, and discovered a link with the drug. Many had used Tylenol in the year before asthma started, they found.
They also discovered that mothers who used the drug while pregnant were more likely to have a child who developed the disease.
