In vitro allergy testing approved

America's major health insurance company, Blue Cross and Blue Shield, has approved coverage of in vitro allergy testing.

This kind of allergy testing has been lauded by some allergists as providing more specificity than skin prick tests even if it is not as sensitive. According to one, in vitro testing can work in tandem with skin tests to help to rout out false positive tests. It can also help in cases where skin pricking isn't feasible, such as with the elderly.
