Hrt: without explanation

Menopausal women are being prescribed hormone replacement therapy by their doctors with inadequate consultation or discussion, according to a survey.

The Amarant Trust found that 80 per cent of the 3,000 respondents thought their doctor spent too little time with them at their first consultation.

Half claimed the consultation had taken less than 10 minutes. Some 137 respondents who had not had hysterectomies had been prescribed oestrogen only preparations, and were therefore at increased risk of endometrial cancer.

Sixty two per cent of respondents said they were worried about the risk of breast cancer.
