Heart failure: Grapes could reduce the risk

Grapes could be a wonder fruit, say scientists, who have found that its flavonoids can dramatically reduce the risk of heart failure.

Just nine servings – or handfuls – of grapes every day can lower blood pressure and improve heart muscle function even if the rest of the diet is poor.

Scientists from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor believe that the grape’s flavonoids, an antioxidant, are its vital health-giving ingredient, which suggests that other flavonoid-rich fruit could be just as effective.

The trial involved laboratory rats, some of whom were given a high-salt diet.  After 18 weeks, the grapes were having a positive effect on all the rats, irrespective of their diet.
