Folk remedy painkiller is as powerful as a drug
A folk remedy that’s been used in South America for thousands of years is as effective a painkiller as a drug, researchers have discovered.
The Brazilian mint (Hyptis crenata), which is usually drunk as a tea, is just as effective as the aspirin-based painkiller Indometacin, and without possible adverse reactions, such as stomach bleeding, researchers from the University of Newcastle in the UK have discovered.
The mint is widely used in South America. Its leaves are boiled in water for 30 minutes and allowed to cool before being drunk as a tea, researchers said.
