Fast for 16 hours a day to stop putting on the pounds
Increasing the time when you don’t eat could be enough to counter even the worst high-fat diet and prevent weight gain. The ideal fasting time is 16 hours every day – which means you eat only during an eight-hour window, say researchers.
The current idea of eating little and often could be contributing to the epidemic of diabetes and obesity, say researchers from the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. Instead, worrying about when you eat – rather than what you eat – could be more important.
In fact, a 16-hour fast every day counteracts even a diet made up of crisps (potato chips) and ice cream, they say.
There’s only one downside to their research – it’s based on mice, not humans, and so we can’t be sure the approach would work as well with us.
