Antidepressant drug sales may have been hit by worries that they increase the risk of suicide, especially among children and adolescents – but doctors have discovered something that works just as well to prevent depression.
The ‘talking cure’ of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) can help prevent depression in those adolescents who are at special risk from developing depression. It’s been tested on 316 adolescents, aged between 13 and 17 years, who either had a history of depression or were showing early signs of depression. CBT was better than standard care in preventing depression, and in reducing depressive symptoms. The only group it didn’t help were those who had a parent who was already depressed.
