Cough drugs no longer sold otc

There were several inaccuracies in your article about over-the-counter cough preparations (WDDTY, vol 8 no 7).

Codeine is only present now in about four proprietary cough medicines available over the counter. Codeine is rarely sold OTC.

Diamorphine cannot be bought OTC. It is subject to full Controlled Drug Regulations. The British National Formulary (BNF) lists diamorphine linctus BPC 73 indicated for cough in terminal disease. I can't remember when I last dispensed any. The preparation is a relic of times past.

Methadone cannot be bought OTC. It too is a full controlled drug. It must be 10 years since I dispensed any. Tom Curry, locum pharmacist, Bury Lancs........
