Substantial numbers of children vaccinated against rubella can nevertheless contract a wild strain of the virus, even within a few years of being vaccinated.
So concludes a rubella (chickenpox) vaccination field trial of 596 girls aged ll through l3 followed up over five years after they were immunized.Ten girls, or 9.8 per cent, were infected by rubella five years after receiving the vaccine during a rubella epidemic.
"These data suggest that a substantial number of vaccinees are reinfected by circulating wild rubella virus, even within a few years of vaccination. This risk seems more pronounced for those in whom vaccine induced antibodies decrease rapidly after immunization," said the study.
