The great British breakfast can increase your chances of bowel cancer by 20 per cent, new research suggests.
The problem is that most people are eating processed meats – such as sausages or bacon – for their breakfast, and even eating 50g, or less than 2 oz, every day is enough to raise the risk.
The new alert comes from the World Cancer Research Fund, which is recommending that everyone should stop eating any processed meats. “Whether you are talking about bacon, ham or pastrami, the safest amount to eat is none at all. You can make a positive difference by cutting out as much as possible,” says Prof Martin Wiseman, the Fund’s medical and scientific adviser.
Some processed meats have also been associated with increasing the risk of other cancers, such as the oesophagus, lung, stomach and prostate, he added.
