B vitamins reduce migraine attacks

Migraine sufferers should start taking vitamin B6 and B12 supplements, new research suggests.  The vitamins may reduce the frequency and severity of migraine attacks.

Researchers from the Genomics Research Centre at Griffith University in Brisbane tested the vitamins on a group of 52 migraine sufferers.  They were given either daily doses of 2 mg folic acid, 25 mg vitamin B and 400 micrograms B12, or placebo, for six months.

Those taking the supplements reported a halving of the severity of the attacks by the end of the study compared with the placebo group, and they also said the number of attacks had reduced.

The latest research follows research carried out in 2004 that found high-dose vitamin B2, or riboflavin, could prevent migraines.
