Colon cancer is often caused by a Western diet that’s high in red meats, processed and refined foods – and, not surprisingly, scientists have discovered that it’s likely to recur, and even prove fatal, in people who have been ‘cured’ if they don’t change their bad eating habits.
Scientists tracked the progress of 1009 patients with stage 3 colon cancer after surgery and chemotherapy. They found that those who went back to their old eating habits were three times more likely to suffer a recurrence, and even die from the cancer, compared with those who changed their diet.
Those who changed their ways started introducing more fruit, vegetables, fish, whole grains and poultry into their diet, and dramatically increased their chances of surviving the cancer as a result.
