Stroke: Hummus and isoflavones can aid recovery

Stroke victims can help their recovery by eating hummus, the Middle Eastern food made from chickpea.  It’s rich in isoflavone, which can help increase the blood flow.

In one study of stroke victims, isoflavone increased the blood flow through the brachial artery by 50 per cent.  The patients were given isoflavone as a supplement, but it is found naturally in hummus and in the soya bean.

Researchers tested the supplement on 50 stroke patients, who were each given an 80 mg dose daily for 12 weeks, while another 52 patients were given a placebo.  By the end of the trial, the supplement group saw a 50 per cent improvement in blood flow through the brachial artery, the main artery found in the arm.
