Medical Tests

The psa test - What to do instead

Consider using the following tests instead:

* The AMAS (antimalignin antibody in serum) test can identify cancer years before it is seen on film or a scan with an accuracy rate of 95-99 per cent (Int J Biol Markers, 1997; 12: 141-7)

* A hormone-level saliva test tests for SHBG (sex hormone-binding globulin), a possible indicator of an increased risk of prostate cancer, and testosterone, which can cause immune dysfunction if deficient

* A transrectal ultrasound scan (TRUS), which can accurately depict the size of the prostate and display abnormal areas

* The ‘cancer profile’ series of blood tests, designed to predict your cancer risk by measuring a whole battery of hormones and enzymes regarded as ‘cancer markers’. While there are no studies verifying the cancer-profile tests as a whole, the link between individual markers and cancer diagnosis, especially when combined, has been confirmed by research.
