There’s a whole new meaning to saddle-sore

Cycling is far from being a healthy, harmless pursuit. Not only is it known to cause cyclist’s nipples, but it is now also responsible for a new condition - cyclist’s vulva.

It has been found in six women who had developed a chronic swelling around the vulva after a few years of intensive cycling.

In addition, all six women had inflammatory skin problems caused by the bicycle saddle, and five had scars and perineal lesions such as chafing.

Doctors recommend that, after cycling, women put their legs up - quite literally - to encourage lymphatic drainage and that they apply cold compresses over the vulval area.

Alternatively, they could always take up something less hazardous, such as hang-gliding (BMJ, 2002; 325: 138).
