Avoid Acidic foods to treat Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

A change in diet cured my carpal tunnel syndromeI thought you might like to hear how I inadvertently fixed my carpal tunnel syndrome, about 30 years ago. I was then a young mother with three daughters, and my husband Jim and I were running a small business. Jim had been suffering from increasing pain and stiffness, and was diagnosed with generalised osteoarthritis.

As the girls were at boarding school, we both went on Dr Dong’s diet (the arthritis diet which eliminates the nightshade family - tomatoes, potatoes, aubergine, peppers and cayenne). It quickly reduced his pain and stiffness. And my carpal tunnel syndrome also disappeared. At half-term, when the girls were home, I opened a carton of orange juice, and had some. Within half an hour, my carpal tunnel syndrome was back!

I found out by experiment that I need to keep off very acid foods, including citrus fruit and (sadly) tonic water. I still have occasional attacks when I have cheated. Like Jim’s diet, this is not a cure - but it keeps the problem at bay. We are both fitter now than we were at 40. - Mrs J. Andrews, Windermere, Cumbria
