Readers questions

Acne

A reader is suffering from crops of spots on his face, mainly on his forehead and scalp, and is keen for any advice from readers.  His doctor diagnosed him as having acne rosacea, but he is unconvinced as his symptoms do not seem to match up with those described in medical books.  No system of hygiene has had any effect.  Can readers suggest any natural treatments that may help?

Diet

According to Eva, acne can often be caused by fungi in the body.  She therefore advocates an anti-fungal diet to clear the condition.  Such a diet – in addition to further information on this theory – is outlined in Fungus Link, by Doug Kaufmann (Mediatrition, 2001).

Several other readers believe diet is key to beating acne.  Rita suggests getting tested for food allergies and intolerances, while Jason proposes giving up milk for a while.  “Milk makes my skin brake out like crazy,” says Jason.  “I would also advise cutting out yeast extracts and the food additive monosodium glutamate,” he says.

Natural Treatments

As for topical solutions, Judy swears by Burt’s Bees Herbal Blemish Stick, which contains tea tree oil, lemon oil and calendula extract.  She also loves their Res-Q Ointment, which, she says, “heals everything I’ve tried it on.”

Another reader has had great results with a product called Aknedoron by Weleda:  “It’s a marvellous lotion that contains sulphur as well as essential oils.  It smells a little eggy due to the sulphur, but it chases away spots in about a week...Have a go!”
