Study finds cancer patients expect radical treatment

Cancer patients expect radical treatment, even if there's little chance for success. That's the conclusion of a study of l06 recently diagnosed cancer patients given questionnaires about their treatment. Most were willing to undergo intensive chemotherapy, even though they were told there was only a tiny chance of benefit far more so than doctors and nurses would have opted for such treatment.

"The patients with cancer appeared to regard a minute chance of possible benefits worthwhile, whatever the cost," said the British Medical Journal study.
