Exercise promotes prevention and recovery in stroke

Regular exercise can reduce the risk of stroke as well as speed recovery for stroke victims, according to results of a 13 year study.

The study, which involved more than 11,000 men, showed that those who took moderate exercise (equivalent to an hour's brisk walk five days a week) had a 46 per cent lower stroke risk than those who took little or no exercise (Stroke, 1998; 29: 2049-54).

A related study has shown that for people who have had a mild to moderate stroke, early intervention, within 30 to 90 days, in the form of intensive home based exercise one and a half hours three times a week can be of more use than simple physiotherapy (Stroke, 1998; 29: 2055-60).
