Those who thought they had escaped infection from blood transfusions by storing their own blood will need to think again. Doctors have discovered that even autologous blood, as it is known, can trigger immune-system-suppressing diseases like cancer w

This means that something happens to donor blood when it is stored, a report in the British Journal of Surgery has concluded. Doctors have discovered that similar rates of cancer, apparently caused by immunosuppression, occur whether the blood is from a different donor or is autologous (British Journal of Surgery 1995;82: 582-7).
