Heart drugs: women at risk

Women who take heart drugs are at greater risk than men of developing torsades de pointes, a sudden quickening of the heart beat rate.

Women made up 70 per cent of the 332 cases of torsades de pointes which were related to heart drugs.

The researchers were examining cases reported in the US from 1980 to 1992.

These findings, by a study team from the Wayne State University and Harper Hospital of Detroit, Michigan, indicate that doctors need to be especially careful in dispensing and monitoring heart drugs for women.
