Bed sharing: no risk of sids

Infants who sleep in the same bed as their parents are no more likely to die from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) than those who sleep alone in a cot.

New research has found no evidence to link co-sleeping with SIDS, despite earlier research from New Zealand that had made a connection between the two.

Researchers from the George Washington Biosatistical Center in Rockville, Maryland, looked at 200 infant deaths and compared them with 200 living children in Southern California. Although 22 per cent of the infants who died from SIDS were sleeping with their parents, researchers concluded that there was "no significant relation" between SIDS and bed sharing (BMJ, November 11, 1995).
