Vitamin d: it can lower your risk of rheumatoid arthritis

For a while now, we at WDDTY have posited the theory that rheumatoid arthritis (RA) could be a symptom of 'sunshine starvation'. In other words, none of us get enough sunlight on our skins.

This theory, outlined in our recent arthritis manual, seems to be supported by researchers who have found that women who had a diet rich in vitamin D were 30 per cent less likely to develop RA, and 40 per cent less likely to develop multiple sclerosis (MS).

While vitamin D can be taken as supplements - such as cod liver oil and the omega-3 fats - its most natural source is the sun.

As both RA and MS are autoimmune conditions, it seems reasonable to suppose that sunshine plays an essential role in maintaining a healthy, self-regulating immune system.
