Cheers!: a little wine stops the common cold

A modest amount of wine a day might well reduce heart problems, many research studies have concluded. Now Spanish researchers have also found that it can stop you catching a cold.

Men and women who drank more than two glasses of wine every week had 40 per cent fewer colds and sniffles than those who drank no alcohol.

Interestingly, the beneficial effects were particularly associated with red wine - and amongst those who were exclusively red wine drinkers - and not at all for other alcoholic drinks.

The researchers were unable to explain why red wine should help ward off colds. Perhaps people who generally live a healthier life are more likely to drink wine, or perhaps it’s all down to the flavonoids, the antioxidants found in grape skin.
