Doctors to be disciplined

The General Medical Council, which disciplines doctors, has made a first move toward introducing a system for dealing with doctors who are rude or incompetent but not guilty of professional misconduct.

The council is currently debating ways of identifying doctors who aren't performing up to scratch and making them undergo more training. Members of the council estimate that between 5 and 10 per cent of doctors perform poorly enough to cause concern.
