Fluoride in water: a humanitarian gesture

I read your article on fluoride (WDDTY, vol 9, no 12) with interest. The government's forthcoming White Paper to fluoridate the drinking water in inner city areas warrants applause on humanitarian grounds.

I wonder if Doris Jones would care to visit and report on dental hospitals, where treatment of rampant tooth decay is undertaken. Young children have all or most of the deciduous teeth extracted under general anaesthesia. The misery caused by this disease is appaling.

To withhold this public health measure from the poorest in the community is callous. If proof of the efficacy of 1 part per million fluoride in water is required, visit Birmingham, where rampant tooth decay is scarce. Allan Cook, London.....
