Tipsy from ulcer drugs

Warnings have now been sounded on two anti ulcer preparations as raising blood alcohol concentrations in social drinkers.

Zantac, Glaxo's major money spinner and the world's bestselling drug, and Tagamet, produced by SmithKline Beecham, have both been shown to raise blood alcohol levels significantly.

According to the study, conducted at Mouth Sinai Medical Centre in New York, testing the effects of alcohol consumption and use of these anti ulcer drugs, found that Zantac increased blood alcohol concentrations by 34 per cent and Tagamet, by 92 per cent.

Although a Glaxo spokesman denied such a link, SmithKline Beecham allowed that by reducing acid secretion, their product would increase absorption in the stomach of any substance, including alcohol.
