Bunions and hammer toes

A reader’s mother has bunions on both feet for many years and has developed a couple of hammer toes.  She recently went to see a specialist who told her that she needed two separate operations on each foot.  All four operations would be conducted under general anaesthetic or an epidural.  Does anyone have any personal experience of this type of operation?  Are there any alternatives and what she can do to maximise healing?

One reader suggests Bowen therapy to deal with both bunions and hammer toes.  To maximise effectiveness, soak feet in Epsom salts every day for six weeks prior to treatment, she advises.  Apparently, her mother tried this and she is now bunion free.  Another reader recommends reflexology.
